A U.S. Marine died on Sunday due to injuries sustained in a vehicle rollover accident over the weekend that occurred at the Twentynine Palms training center in California.

A press release shared by the Marine Air-Ground Task Force (MAGTF) Training Command and Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center at 29 Palms on Facebook stated, “A Marine assigned to Tactical Training Exercise Control Group died today, July 28, 2024. He was involved in a vehicle rollover with a high mobility multi-purpose wheeled vehicle on July 27, 2024, at Marine Corps Air-Ground Combat Center.”

The press release explained that the Marine received treatment for his injuries at the Robert E. Bush Naval Hospital before being medically evacuated and transported to the Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs, California. After being transported to the Desert Regional Medical Center, the Marine was declared dead on Sunday.

According to the press release, Saturday’s rollover incident took place during Service Level Training Exercise 5-24. The press release also noted that no other Marines were injured in the incident.

Stars and Stripes reported that the vehicle involved in the rollover incident was a Humvee. According to Military.com, one of the top causes of fatalities in the U.S. military is vehicle rollovers. Military.com noted that a government watchdog report from 2021 found that 123 Marines and soldiers had been killed in noncombat vehicle accidents since 2011.

The MAGTF Training Command and Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center at 29 Palms added, “We extend our deepest condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the Marine during this difficult time.”

Sunday’s press release also explained that the cause of the vehicle rollover is currently under investigation and that the identity of the Marine who died as a result of the incident would not be released until all of the next-of-kin notifications were finalized.

On Monday, a Marine spokesperson told The Daily Caller that there were “[n]o updates as of now.”
