Indiana shoots down Trump-backed congressional map to add GOP House seats

On June 10, 2025, the U.S. President Donald Trump watches the U.S. Army Special Operations Command and the 18th Airborne Corps host a Capabilities Exercise. During this monumental event, National leaders watched as Special Forces of 3rd Special Forces Group, the 75th Ranger Regiment and the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment showcased precision, speed, and tactical coordination, underscoring Fort Bragg’s role at the center of the U.S. military readiness. The Indiana State Senate voted on Thursday to reject a new congressional map that would have redrawn congressional district lines and created two additional conservative-leaning seats in the U.S. House of Representatives ahead of the 2026 midterm elections. The map had been supported by President Donald Trump.

According to Fox News, the Indiana State Senate voted 31 to 19 on Thursday against the new congressional map. The outlet noted that 21 Republicans and 10 Democrats voted against the Trump-backed congressional map after months of the president urging Indiana Republicans to move forward with redistricting efforts and help the Republican Party maintain control of the House ahead of next year’s midterm elections.

Fox News reported that the new congressional map would have eliminated the current districts of Rep. Frank Mrvan (D-Ind.) and Rep. Andre Carson (D-Ind.) and would have likely given Republicans control of all nine U.S. House seats in the state.

Thursday’s vote in the Indiana State Senate came after the Indiana House voted 57 to 41 last week to pass the Trump-backed redistricting bill, according to Fox News. Additionally, last week, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that Texas could move forward with similar redistricting efforts that are expected to result in five additional conservative-leaning seats in the House.

On Wednesday, Trump issued a lengthy statement on Truth Social urging Republican lawmakers in Indiana to vote in favor of the new congressional map. The president said Indiana had a “chance to make a difference in Washington, D.C., in regard to the number of House seats we have that are necessary to hold the Majority against the Radical Left Democrats.”

“In all fairness, the Democrats have been doing Redistricting for years, and continue to do so. Unfortunately, Indiana Senate ‘Leader’ Rod Bray enjoys being the only person in the United States of America who is against Republicans picking up extra seats, in Indiana’s case, two of them,” Trump said. “He is putting every ounce of his limited strength into asking his soon to be very vulnerable friends to vote with him. By doing so, he is putting the Majority in the House of Representatives, Washington, D.C., at risk and, at the same time, putting anybody in Indiana who votes against this Redistricting, likewise, at risk.”

Following Thursday’s vote against the redistricting efforts in Indiana, Alex Bruesewitz, a top conservative consultant and an ally of Trump, slammed state Republicans, tweeting, “The spineless RINOs in Indiana, many hailing from districts where President Trump won by over 20% just last November have stabbed their own voters in the back and sold out America! We’ll be launching primary challenges against every last traitor who voted no, effective immediately! Pack your bags, your time is up!”
