A mass shooting at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, left two students dead and nine others injured on Saturday. One of the students has been identified as a conservative activist.

In a Sunday night post on X, formerly Twitter, Providence Mayor Brett Smiley announced that the Providence Department was releasing a person of interest who had been arrested in connection with Saturday’s shooting. The mayor also confirmed that an investigation remained “fully active” into the shooting.

According to Fox News, the mass shooting at Brown University took place at roughly 4 p.m. on Saturday inside a classroom at the Barus and Holley engineering building. The outlet noted that two students were killed, while nine students were injured in the shooting.

Fox News reported that university students hid in locked rooms with barricaded doors for multiple hours after the shooting started at Brown University. Some of the students told Fox News that they remained sheltered for roughly seven hours after the mass shooting started at 4 p.m.

One student told Fox News, “Everyone kinda like huddled around a certain area with the lights off, barricaded the doors and then it was about like, oh, maybe 7 or 8 p.m., when the DPS or the public safety officer came from Brown and then they got us out.”

In a statement obtained by Fox News, the Cathedral Church of the Advent in Birmingham identified one of the deceased college students as Ella Cook, a conservative activist and sophomore at Brown University.

“Some of you haven’t heard, a lot of you have heard … [about] the tragedy yesterday at Brown University, the shooting of a number of people,” Rev. Craig Smalley said on Sunday. “Tragically, one of our parishioners, Ella Cook, was one of those who was killed yesterday.”

College Republicans of America confirmed in a statement on social media that Cook was the vice president of Brown University College Republicans.

“We are devastated to learn of the loss of our Brown College Republicans Vice President, Ella Cook,” College Republicans of America President Martin Bertao said. “Ellas was known for her bold, brave, and kind heart as she served her chapter and her fellow classmates. Our prayers are with her family, our Brown CR’s, and the entirety of the campus as they heal from this tragedy.”
