President Donald Trump’s administration announced on Monday that it supports two new bills proposed by Republican representatives to further crack down on crime in Washington, D.C., and provide additional support for law enforcement officials.
In a statement of policy published by the White House’s Office of Management and Budget and first obtained by The Daily Wire on Monday, the Trump administration signaled that it “strongly supports” both the District of Columbia Cash Bail Reform Act (HR 5214), which was introduced in September by Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.), and the Common-Sense Law Enforcement and Accountability Now in DC (CLEAN DC) Act of 2025 (HR 5107), which was also introduced in September by Rep. Andrew Clyde (R-Ga.)
“Together, these bills would hold criminals accountable and empower law enforcement officers,” the Office of Management and Budget’s statement of policy said. “Their reforms would help make America’s Federal city more safe, free, and beautiful and critically advance the President’s broader law and order agenda.”
The Daily Wire reported that both Republican-sponsored bills were advanced on Monday by the House Oversight Committee.

The Office of Management and Budget’s statement of policy noted that Stefanik’s bill would “require mandatory pretrial detention for defendants charged with certain enumerated public safety and order crimes,” while Clyde’s legislation would “reverse unnecessary and detrimental restrictions placed on officers of the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department (MPD).”
The Trump administration’s statement of policy warned that the elimination of cash bail and the release of “dangerous criminals” in American cities is one of the main reasons cities across the country have “experienced so many repeat offenders and preventable tragedies.” The statement of policy pointed to Washington, D.C., as a “prime example” of the issue and suggested that the Republican congresswoman’s bill would make D.C. streets safer.
The Trump administration’s statement of policy also noted that the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department currently faces multiple restrictions, such as “removing all officers and police union representatives from the Police Complaints Board, requiring juries to consider whether an officer consulted with mental health, behavioral health, or social workers before using deadly force, and imposing approval hurdles for the use of riot gear and less-lethal projectiles.”
“Removing these restrictions would help restore the effectiveness of the MPD and maintain law and order in Washington, D.C.,” the Office of Management and Budget added in its statement.
