Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem announced on Monday that over 480,000 illegal immigrants have been arrested in the first nine months of President Donald Trump’s second administration. Noem also confirmed that 70 percent of the illegal immigrants arrested by the Trump administration have criminal charges or have been convicted on criminal charges.
In a Monday speech highlighting the Department of Homeland Security’s operations under Trump’s administration, Noem said, “Today marks nine months since President Trump has been in office and since he began his work to restore American safety for our families that live here. What he has accomplished for the American people is nothing short of extraordinary. We appreciate what he has done to make us safe again, to secure our borders and to make sure that he’s protecting our people.”
Noem explained that Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials have arrested more than 480,000 “criminal illegal aliens” since January.
“Seventy percent of those individuals have criminal charges against them or have been convicted of those criminal charges,” Noem said. “Across the country, we’re making communities safer so that families can thrive and they can prosper and they can enjoy the kind of freedom that this country was established to provide.”
“Unfortunately, many times, we see the news distorting the truth and not bringing the real facts of the stories to the American people, and that is one of the reasons why we’re here today,” the Homeland Security secretary added.
Last month, the Department of Homeland Security announced that over 2 million illegal immigrants have either self-deported or have been removed from the United States under Trump’s administration. The department said that roughly 1.6 million illegal immigrants have chosen to self-deport. Meanwhile, the Trump administration has deported over 400,00 illegal immigrants and is expected to carry out a total of nearly 600,000 deportations by the end of the year.
In a Monday statement on X, formerly Twitter, Noem pledged that the Department of Homeland Security will continue to carry out the president’s promise to “Make America Safe Again, secure our borders, and protect our people.”
