The family of Diane Keaton revealed the famous actress’ cause of death on Wednesday after Keaton passed away on Saturday in California.

In a statement to People magazine, Keaton’s family revealed that the 79-year-old award-winning actress died from pneumonia on Saturday.

“The Keaton family are very grateful for the extraordinary messages of love and support they have received these past few days on behalf of their beloved Diane, who passed away from pneumonia on October 11,” the actress’ family stated.

“She loved her animals and she was steadfast in her support of the unhoused community, so any donations in her memory to a local food bank or an animal shelter would be a wonderful and much appreciated tribute to her,” Keaton’s family added.

ABC News reported that the details regarding Keaton’s death were not immediately released after the actress was confirmed dead on Saturday. According to the outlet, the Los Angeles Fire Department confirmed on Saturday that emergency responders were dispatched to Keaton’s home in Brentwood, California, at roughly 8:08 a.m. (local time) and transported a patient to the hospital.

An anonymous source told People that Keaton’s health “declined very suddenly, which was heartbreaking for everyone who loved her.” The source also described the 79-year-old actress’ death as “so unexpected, especially for someone with such strength and spirit.”

“In her final months, she was surrounded only by her closest family, who chose to keep things very private,” the source said. “Even longtime friends weren’t fully aware of what was happening.”

According to Fox News, Keaton’s acting career stretched across six decades and included numerous roles in movies, television programs, and theater productions. The outlet noted that Keaton won two Golden Globe Awards, one Academy Award, and one BAFTA Award. Some of the 79-year-old actress’ best-known movies included “Annie Hall,” “Father of the Bride,” “The Godfather,” and “The First Wives Club.”
