A video shared on social media shows Democrat members of the House of Representatives objecting to prayer for Christian conservative activist Charlie Kirk, the founder of Turning Point USA, who was assassinated on Wednesday while speaking at an event at Utah Valley University.

In a video shared on X, formerly Twitter, House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) can be seen asking lawmakers to observe a moment of silence and prayer for the 31-year-old conservative activist after reports spread that he had been shot in the neck.

Johnson asked lawmakers to “please rise for a moment of prayer for Charlie Kirk and his family.” Members of the House of Representatives then observed a moment of silence before Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.) said, “I believe silent prayer gets silent results.” The Colorado representative can also be heard asking for a prayer to be made for Kirk “out loud.”

In response to Boebert’s request for a prayer to be said “out loud” for the 31-year-old founder of Turning Point USA, multiple Democrats yelled in objection. The Wall Street Journal reported that Rep. Jahana Hayes (D-Conn.) was heard shouting about school shootings, while many other Democrats shouted “no.” The Daily Mail reported that one Democrat lawmaker also shouted, “Pass some gun laws!”

According to The Wall Street Journal, Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-Fla.) shouted at the Democrat lawmakers, saying, “You all caused this.”

In the video, Johnson can be seen repeatedly banging his gavel and urging lawmakers to restore order in the House of Representatives. Johnson repeatedly stated, “The House will be in order.” Later in the video, Johnson can be heard saying, “We will join for prayer right after this, OK?”

Commenting on Wednesday’s incident in the House of Representatives in a post on social media, Boebert tweeted, “Charlie Kirk boldly and unapologetically invoked the name of the Lord Jesus Christ when he spoke across the country. That’s part of his legacy and we should all continue to pray fervently and speak fearlessly about the goodness of God, the love of Jesus and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit; especially on the House floor.”

Jon Michael Raasch, a reporter for The Daily Mail, described the chaos observed Wednesday inside the House of Representatives as “possibly the ugliest moment I’ve ever witnessed in politics.”
