Pics: 5 killed, 49 injured in major tour bus crash in New York

Five people were killed and 49 people were injured after a tour bus overturned and rolled off the Interstate 90 highway in New York on Friday.

In a Saturday press release, the New York State Police announced that state troopers responded on Friday to a “tour bus rollover collision” at roughly 12:22 p.m. between exits 48A and 49 on Interstate 90 in Pembroke, New York. The New York State Police explained that an investigation identified the bus as a 2005 Van Wool Bus and Coach tour bus that was traveling from Niagara Falls to New York City. The bus was owned by M&Y Tour Inc., which is based in Staten Island.

“The bus exited the roadway into the median then abruptly corrected causing the bus to overturn and roll off the I-90 on the south embankment,” the New York State Police stated. “Multiple passengers were ejected, trapped with 5 deceased at the scene. Multiple individuals were taken to Erie County Medical Center, Strong Memorial Hospital, Millard Fillmore Suburban and UMMR in Batavia. Mercy Flight and numerous EMS and first responders assisted at the scene.”

Saturday’s press release confirmed that 54 people were on the bus at the time of the collision. The New York State Police noted that while the crash remains under investigation, the bus did not experience mechanical failure and 55-year-old Bin Shao, the operator of the bus, had “no signs of impairment.”

The New York State Police identified the 5 deceased victims in Friday’s tour bus crash as Xie Hongzhuo, a 22-year-old Columbia University student from China; Zhang Xiaolan, a 55 year-old from New Jersey; Jian Mingli, a 56-year-old from New Jersey; Pinki Changrani, a 60-year-old from New Jersey; and Shankar Kumar, a 65-year-old from India.

According to CBS News, in addition to the five deaths, 21 individuals were hospitalized at Erie County Medical Center, six individuals were treated at the University of Rochester Medical Center, and two individuals were treated and released at the United Memorial Medical Center in Batavia.

Spectrum News reported that an additional 13 individuals were treated at Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital, four individuals were treated at Buffalo General Medical Center, and three individuals were treated at Oishei Children’s Hospital.
