A new bill sponsored by Republicans would provide funding for states to open new illegal immigrant detention facilities like Alligator Alcatraz across the country as President Donald Trump’s administration continues to arrest and deport illegal immigrants at a historic pace.
In a Friday press release, Rep. Addison McDowell (R-N.C.) announced a new bill that would “support state-run detention facilities for illegal aliens by redirecting wasteful Biden-era spending.”
“Illegal immigrants are here because of the Left’s open border policies. No more.” McDowell said in a statement to The Daily Wire. “Through codifying President Trump’s executive actions, no longer will illegals be put up in swanky hotels for extended stays. Now they will face swift deportation.”
According to Friday’s press release, the Accelerated Logistics and Coordination for Arresting, Transporting, and Removing Aliens Zones (ALCATRAZ) Act would establish a Department of Homeland Security program to reimburse states and local governments that build and operate new illegal immigrant detention centers. The bill would also transfer funds allocated for illegal immigrants under the Biden administration to a new “Detention and Logistics Program” and would require Homeland Security to identify wasteful spending that could be used by the Detention and Logistics Program.
“Alligator Alcatraz has provided a model for quickly and efficiently opening new detention facilities to temporarily house illegal aliens before deportation. Instead of housing illegals in swanky hotels, it’s time to expand on this model and disincentivize what has been seen as a free ride,” McDowell said. “Through the ALCATRAZ Act, we will rapidly expand our available bed space for illegal aliens and facilitate their swift deportations. We could even see the creation of a Tar Heel Tank right here in North Carolina.”
The ALCATRAZ Act has been co-sponsored by Rep. Barry Moore (R-Ala.) Rep. Byron Donalds (R-Fla.), Rep. Laurel Lee (R-Fla.), Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.), Rep. Pat Harrigan (R-N.C.), and Rep. Tim Moore (R-N.C.)
“The ALCATRAZ Act is about ending the revolving door at our border. States stepping up to build and operate detention facilities should be backed, not blocked, by Washington,” Harrigan stated. “I’m proud to cosponsor this bill because it delivers the infrastructure needed to detain and remove illegal aliens while restoring order to a broken system.”
Friday’s press release explained that the ALCATRAZ Act supports the Trump administration’s effort to reduce wasteful spending and illegal immigration by redirecting “Biden-era spending” to the detention of illegal immigrants prior to deportation.
