A 28-year-old Army sergeant was arrested on Wednesday after shooting and injuring five soldiers at Fort Stewart in Georgia.

During a Wednesday press conference, Brigadier General John Lubas, the Third Infantry Division’s commanding general, confirmed that an active shooter assigned to Fort Stewart “shot and wounded five of his fellow soldiers” at the fort. Lubas noted that the suspect responsible for the shooting had been arrested and that all of Fort Stewart’s lockdown measures had been lifted.

“I’d like to recognize and thank our army law enforcement and medical personnel and our partners from local, state, and federal law enforcement and emergency services for their quick response and support,” Lubas said. “I would also like to thank the brave soldiers who immediately intervened and subdued the shooter. These soldiers, without a doubt, prevented further casualties.”

The commanding general of the Third Infantry Division told reporters that the five wounded soldiers were initially evacuated in stable condition to the Winn Army Community Hospital, which is located at Fort Stewart. While Lubas explained that the victims are in stable condition and are expected to recover from their injuries, he noted that three of the victims underwent “surgical intervention” and two of the victims were transported to Memorial Hospital in Savannah, Georgia.

Lubas announced on Wednesday that Quornelius Radford, a 28-year-old automated logistics sergeant assigned to the Second Brigade Combat Team, had been identified as the suspect in Wednesday’s shooting incident at Fort Stewart. Lubas confirmed that the Army Criminal Investigation Division interviewed Radford and that the suspect remained in pre-trial confinement while awaiting the Office of the Special Trial Counsel’s charging decision.

“Right now, our primary focus is first on caring for our injured soldiers and their families and also supporting the soldiers of the Spartan Brigade,” Lubas told reporters. “All of the families of the victims have been notified, and we’re wrapping our arms around them and ensuring we provide them all the support that we can.”

Lubas added that Wednesday’s incident at Fort Stewart remains under investigation.

Fox News reported that Radford joined the Army as an Automated Logistical Specialist in January of 2018 and has never been deployed.

According to a court filing obtained by The Associated Press, Radford was scheduled for a court hearing on August 20 after being accused of going through a red light and driving under the influence on May 18. The outlet noted that the sergeant was released on a $1,818 bond following the incident.
