A spokesperson for the office of Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) confirmed on Wednesday that the Democrat senator was hospitalized suddenly and “treated for dehydration” in Washington, D.C., amid a massive heat wave across a significant portion of the country.
Schumer’s office told Fox News that the Senate minority leader became “lightheaded” when he was at the Senate gym on Monday morning. In a statement, Schumer’s office told Fox News, “Out of an abundance of caution, he went to the hospital to be treated for dehydration and is now back at work in the Capitol.”
According to Fox News, the spokesperson for Schumer’s office added that the Democrat senator wanted to remind people “to drink some water and stay out of the heat” as high temperatures persist in the region.
A source told The New York Post that the 74-year-old Democrat senator’s lightheadedness occurred on Wednesday as he was working out at the Senate gym on a stationary bike. The New York Post reported that Schumer later attended a press conference on airline safety following Wednesday’s hospitalization.

According to Fox News, Washington, D.C., was expected to reach temperatures in the high 90s on Wednesday amid the East Coast heatwave.
In a post on X, formerly Twitter, Washington D.C. Homeland Security and Emergency Management warned, “Extreme Heat Alert for DC: Until 8PM Today. Daytime temperatures will feel like 105°F or hotter. Drink water. Stay cool.”
Schumer’s hospitalization on Wednesday comes just a little over a week after Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem was suddenly hospitalized in Washington, D.C., last Tuesday after experiencing an allergic reaction.
“Secretary Noem had an allergic reaction today,” Department of Homeland Security Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said in a statement obtained by CNN following news of Noem’s hospitalization. “She was transported to the hospital out of an abundance of caution. She is alert and recovering.”
