President Donald Trump announced on Sunday that he was ordering the Bureau of Prisons to work together with multiple federal agencies to rebuild and reopen a larger version of the Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary in San Francisco, California, to house the “most ruthless and violent” criminals in the United States.

In a Sunday statement on Truth Social, Trump wrote, “REBUILD, AND OPEN ALCATRAZ! For too long, America has been plagued by vicious, violent, and repeat Criminal Offenders, the dregs of society, who will never contribute anything other than Misery and Suffering.”

Trump claimed that the United States “did not hesitate to lock up the most dangerous criminals” and prevent them from harming anyone when the country was a “more serious Nation.”

“That’s the way it’s supposed to be,” Trump added. “No longer will we tolerate these Serial Offenders who spread filth, bloodshed, and mayhem on our streets.”

The 47th president explained that he was directing the Bureau of Prisons, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Department of Justice, and the Department of Homeland Security to “reopen a substantially enlarged and rebuilt ALCATRAZ” that will be used to “house America’s most ruthless and violent Offenders.”

“We will no longer be held hostage to criminals, thugs, and Judges that are afraid to do their job and allow us to remove criminals, who came into our Country illegally,” Trump said. “The reopening of ALCATRAZ will serve as a symbol of Law, Order, and JUSTICE. We will, MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”

According to Fox News, Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary opened in 1934 on a 22-acre rock island known as Alcatraz Island. The outlet noted that Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary closed in 1963 after just 29 years of operation due to the island prison’s operations requiring far more resources than prisons built inside the mainland of the United States.

Fox News reported that Alcatraz Island, which is located roughly 1.25 miles from the shore of California, was considered to be almost impossible to escape while the prison was operational. However, the outlet reported that 14 attempted escapes were still documented at the famous federal prison.

According to Fox News, Alcatraz Island currently serves as a tourist attraction in San Francisco that is operated by the National Park Service.
