Attorney General Pam Bondi announced on Wednesday that the Department of Justice is suing New York for deciding to “prioritize illegal aliens over American citizens.” The attorney general also warned other states not following federal immigration laws, saying, “You’re next, get ready.”

During a Wednesday press conference, Bondi explained that President Donald Trump’s administration filed charges against Gov. Kathy Hochul (D-N.Y.), New York Attorney General Letitia James, and New York Department of Motor Vehicles Commissioner Mark Schroeder.

“This is a new DOJ, and we are taking steps to protect Americans, American citizens, and angel moms, like the mom standing right behind me, who you’re gonna hear from in a moment,” Bondi said. “New York has chosen to prioritize illegal aliens over American citizens. It stops today.”

“As you know, we sued Illinois, and New York didn’t listen. So now you’re next,” Trump’s attorney general added. “Millions of illegal aliens with violent records have flooded into our communities, bringing violence and deadly drugs with them.”

Bondi warned that if states do not follow federal immigration laws, the Department of Justice will hold them accountable. She described the Trump administration’s lawsuit against Illinois as “strike one” and the administration’s lawsuit against New York as “strike two.”

Bondi added, “And if you are a state not complying with federal law, you’re next, get ready.”

Addressing the lawsuit against New York regarding its illegal immigration policies, Bondi said the Democrat-run state has “green light laws” that prevent law enforcement officials from checking the identity of illegal immigrants and accessing their background information when they “pull them over.” Bondi explained that the state’s green light laws put law enforcement officers’ “lives on the line” as they often have “no idea who they’re dealing with.”

“Violent criminals, gang members, drug traffickers, human smugglers will no longer terrorize the American people,” Bondi said during Wednesday’s press conference. “And that is why we are here today. You will be held accountable if you do not follow federal law. It’s over, it ends, and we’re coming after you.”

Following Bondi’s announcement on Wednesday, Hochul released a statement claiming that the press conference was just “smoke and mirrors” and that the Trump administration’s lawsuit was just a “routine civil action about a law passed in 2019 that has been upheld by the courts time and again.”

“We expect Pam Bondi’s worthless, publicity-driven lawsuit to be a total failure, just like all the others,” Hochul added. “Let me be clear: New York is not backing down.”
