A “non-credible” bomb threat forced an American Airlines flight traveling from New York City to India to be diverted and escorted by two Italian Air Force Eurofighter Typhoon airplanes over the weekend.

According to The Daily Mail, American Airlines Flight 292 departed from the John F. Kennedy International Airport at roughly 8:30 p.m. on Saturday and was traveling to the Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi, India. The outlet noted that while flying near Turkmenistan, the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner was forced to turn around and divert to Rome due to a “possible security issue” reported by American Airlines.

ABC News reported that 199 passengers and 15 crew members were aboard the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner at the time of the “security issue.”

An American Airlines spokesperson told Fox News that the aircraft “landed safely in Rome on Sunday afternoon after it was diverted due to a security concern, which later proved to be non-credible.” A senior official with knowledge of the American Airlines incident told ABC News that the security concern was prompted by an email that contained an unfounded bomb threat.

In a statement obtained by The New York Post, American Airlines said, “Safety and security are our top priorities and we thank our customers for their understanding. We are working closely with local authorities and will provide updates as the situation develops.”

A video shared on X, formerly Twitter, by Collin Rugg, co-owner of Trending Politics, shows the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner being escorted by Italian Air Force Eurofighter Typhoon airplanes prior to landing at the Leonardo da Vinci International Airport in Rome.

According to The New York Post, the diverted American Airlines flight resulted in passengers being forced to remain on the flight for a total of 14 hours and 45 minutes.

The New York Post reported that the American Airlines Flight 292 incident comes less than two weeks after another American Airlines plane was forced to evacuate and was delayed for almost five hours when one of the airline’s passengers was found to have a Wi-Fi hotspot labeled “There is a bomb on the flight.”
