The White House has revealed the cause of a mysterious bruise on President Donald Trump’s hand that was spotted during his meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron earlier this week.
The 47th president was photographed with a bruise on his right hand during his meeting with the French president at the White House on Monday, leading to widespread speculation from news outlets and from people on social media platforms.
A picture shared on X, formerly Twitter, by Fox News shows the visible bruising that was spotted during his meeting with Macron.
Following the publication of the picture from Trump’s meeting with Macron, social media users shared multiple different theories regarding the bruising on the president’s right hand. One social media user suggested, “Hmmm, either an IV bruise or caused by blood thinners on Trump’s hand!”
Meanwhile, another social media user tweeted, “President Trump’s hand is bruised and battered after reversing Biden’s wild executive orders at warp speed—looks like signing those papers and shaking a million hands (including Macron’s) took a toll! Makeup can’t hide the battle scars of Making America Great Again, one firm handshake at a time.”
Following speculation regarding the mysterious bruise spotted on Trump’s hand, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt provided a statement to Fox News, saying, “President Trump is a man of the people and he meets more Americans and shakes their hands on a daily basis than any other President in history.”

The White House press secretary added, “His commitment is unwavering and he proves that every single day.”
Leavitt provided a similar answer in a follow-up statement to NBC News. “President Trump has bruises on his hand because he’s constantly working and shaking hands all day every day,” she told the outlet.
According to NBC News, Trump had been observed with visible bruises and redness on his right hand at least two different times prior to Monday’s meeting with the French president. The outlet noted that Trump’s hand appeared to be bruised at least once in August and once in November of 2024.
Following the 2024 presidential election, Trump was asked about the mysterious bruising on his right hand during an interview with Time magazine. At the time, Trump told Time magazine, “It’s from shaking hands with thousands of people.”
