Military dog ‘gave all to our country’ — then lived in neglect. Now he needs a home

A dog that used to work for the government is in need of a new home — one that’s free from the torment he faced following his retirement.

Ceaser was once a military dog who “gave his all to our country” and was taken in by K9 Hero Haven in Pennsylvania, a shelter that houses former working dogs and finds them new homes. But that wasn’t the case for Ceaser and many other animals, the Pennsylvania Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) in Philadelphia said.

“When they retired and needed a place to go, K-9 Hero Haven, a rescue organization in Northumberland county, offered them a place to settle and find new forever homes,” the shelter said in a May 24 Facebook post, back when the dogs were in the process of being rescued and relocated from the location.

“But instead of receiving a blissful retirement, they were faced with the unfathomable. Respected dogs that once sacrificed everything for humankind were now subjected to a life of filth and neglect.”

The post said that kennels were “covered in feces and blood,” and they were left with dirty water. K9 Hero Haven was owned by Ann Gibbs, who was charged with animal cruelty in 2023, WCAU reported.

One of those neglected pups was Ceaser.

“For many years, he worked for a contracting agency assisting government and military work. The epitome of ‘man’s best friend,’ he went into every day ready to protect us and our Nation,” the shelter said in a Jan. 6 post.

“Once his working days were over, Ceaser expected to retire in comfort. Instead, he was left behind, forgotten, and neglected at K9 Hero Haven, a place that should’ve gave him respite.

“But then, we rescued him.”

Ceaser is a 7-year-old German Shepherd mix with tan and black markings and a high intelligence, according to his pet profile. The shelter isn’t exactly sure what sort of government work he performed, just that he’s loyal and loving.

“After all Ceaser has been through, he deserves the world. While today he is simply happy to play in the snow with his favorite toy, he needs more,” the shelter said. “He has earned the right to rest in a home, to be cared for, and to feel loved by a family after a lifetime of serving others.”

Ceaser would do better in a household that has people with experience working with military trained dogs.
