A Pulitzer Prize-winning newspaper cartoonist, who previously mocked conservatives for child grooming concerns and has been critical of President-elect Donald Trump, was arrested for the possession of child pornography on Wednesday.
In a Thursday press release, the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office announced that the Sacramento Valley Internet Crimes Against Children Detectives (ICAC) conducted an investigation after receiving a tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children regarding a suspect uploading child sex abuse material.
“The tip was related to 18 files containing CSAM,” law enforcement officials stated. “The investigation continued, and a total of 134 videos of CSAM were located and linked to the same account, owned and controlled by 49-year-old Darrin Bell.”
The press release explained that Internet Crimes Against Children Detectives executed a search warrant at Bell’s home on Wednesday and recovered evidence, including “computer-generated” child sex abuse material. Law enforcement officials confirmed that Bell was arrested and booked at the Sacramento County Main Jail, where he remains on $1 million bail.

The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office noted that the political cartoonist’s arrest was the first arrest by the Sacramento Valley Internet Crimes Against Children Detectives where “possession of computer-generated/AI CSAM was charged against a suspect” due to a new law regarding criminal artificial intelligence-generated material that went into effect earlier this month.
In the press release, law enforcement officials confirmed that Bell is a “well-known cartoonist” and that he has been “featured in several prominent publications.” According to The New York Post, Bell has had illustrations published in The Los Angeles Times, The New Yorker, and The Washington Post.
In April of 2022, Bell shared a political cartoon on social media, criticizing Republicans for expressing concerns regarding child groomers, specifically in connection with the LGBTQ movement. At the time, Bell tweeted, “#Republicans describe those who teach respect for #LGBT people as #Groomers.”
Following news of Bell’s arrest, media personality Erick Erickson tweeted, “Cartoonist who attacked conservatives for pointing out grooming behavior turns out to have child porn on his laptop. Surprise. Surprise.”
