Democrats in the House of Representatives faced major backlash on Tuesday after sharing a social media post that appeared to mock Americans who have struggled with rising prices and record-high inflation under the Biden-Harris administration.
In a social media post that has since been deleted, the Ways and Means Democrats shared a screenshot on Tuesday of a tweet from journalist Paul Brandus that read, “Record air travel, holiday shopping busting records, stock market at all-time highs. The economy is ‘the worst ever,’ some Pollyannas whine.” The Ways and Means Democrats account wrote, “And here we were thinking y’all couldn’t afford eggs!”
While House Democrats later deleted the post, conservatives were quick to criticize Democrat lawmakers for mocking Americans who have struggled to afford the price of groceries and other basic necessities over the past four years.

“Democrats deleted this tweet,” House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) wrote alongside a screenshot in a post on X, formerly Twitter. “Americans have been struggling for FOUR YEARS to afford basic necessities and House Democrats are mocking them. Talk about your all-time out of touch, disgraceful comments.”
Johnson also pledged that House Republicans will “deliver for hardworking Americans.”
“What an embarrassing thing to post … wow,” Abigail Jackson, the communications director for Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.), tweeted, adding, “and Dems wonder why they lost.”
Amanda Head, a conservative commentator, also criticized the Democratic lawmakers on the Ways and Means Committee, saying, “This is really what Democrat staffers on Capitol Hill think of the American majority who just rejected their policies after causing the worst inflation crisis our country has seen.” The conservative commentator added that the Democrat lawmakers’ controversial post shows “how out-of-touch” Democrats are with the American people.
Addressing the Democrat committee’s apparent attempt to make fun of people complaining about the increased price of eggs, Rep. Claudia Tenney (R-N.Y.) wrote, “Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall, Egg prices soared—he couldn’t afford it all! Ways and Means Dems tweeted with smiles so wide, While the cost of eggs kept rising high! Humpty Dumpty cracked in despair, ‘These prices, these prices, they’re too much to bear!’ Democrats laugh, they don’t seem to care, But we’re stuck paying more for eggs in high-cost despair!”
Prior to the presidential election last month, a Gallup poll revealed that 52% of Americans believed they were worse off under the Biden-Harris administration than they were under the Trump administration. According to Fox News, roughly 46% of Americans described their current economic conditions as poor, while only 25% of Americans described their economic conditions as “good” or “excellent.”
