President-elect Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that Tesla CEO Elon Musk and former 2024 Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy will lead a new federal agency called the Department of Government Efficiency.
In a statement on Truth Social, Trump wrote, “I am pleased to announce that the Great Elon Musk, working in conjunction with American Patriot Vivek Ramaswamy, will lead the Department of Government Efficiency (‘DOGE’). Together, these two wonderful Americans will pave the way for my Administration to dismantle Government Bureaucracy, slash excess regulations, cut wasteful expenditures, and restructure Federal Agencies – Essential to the ‘Save America’ Movement.”
As part of Trump’s announcement of a new federal government department, Musk said, “This will send shockwaves through the system, and anyone involved in Government waste, which is a lot of people!”
Trump said the Department of Government Efficiency has the potential to become “‘The Manhattan Project’ of our time” and explained that Republicans have “dreamed” of executing the objectives that the department will be responsible for.
The president-elect explained that the department will “provide advice and guidance from outside the Government” and will work with both the White House and the Office of Management & Budget to “drive large scale structural reform, and create an entrepreneurial approach to Government never seen before.”

Trump said that both Musk and Ramaswamy will make changes to the current “Federal Bureaucracy’ and will improve life “for all Americans” by eliminating “massive waste and fraud” as part of the annual $6.5 trillion in current government spending.
“They will work together to liberate our Economy, and make the U.S. Government accountable to ‘WE THE PEOPLE,'” Trump added, “Their work will conclude no later than July 4, 2026 – A smaller Government, with more efficiency and less bureaucracy, will be the perfect gift to America on the 250th Anniversary of The Declaration of Independence. I am confident they will succeed!”
Following Trump’s announcement, Ramaswamy shared the president-elect’s statement, tweeting, “We will not go gently, @elonmusk.”
In another post, Ramaswamy wrote, “Over the last 2 years, the Supreme Court has ruled that the administrative state is behaving in wildly unlawful ways. But slapping the bureaucracy on the wrist won’t solve the problem, the only right answer is a massive downsizing.”
Musk also commented on Trump’s announcement in a post on X by referencing the Democratic Party’s constant description of Trump as a “threat to democracy.” Musk tweeted, “Threat to democracy? Nope, threat to BUREAUCRACY!!!”
