New federal election paperwork shows that Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) has filed to run for reelection in 2026.

Pelosi filed the reelection paperwork with the Federal Election Commission on Thursday. According to The Post Millennial, the 84-year-old Democrat has served as the representative for California’s 11th Congressional District since 1987. Pelosi previously served as the speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives from 2007 to 2011 and from 2019 to 2023. Last week, Pelosi was reelected to her 20th term in office.

In an interview with The New York Times following the 2024 presidential election, Pelosi did not confirm whether her current term in office would be her final term; however, she emphasized that she would continue to “fight the fight” and attempt to help Democrats win the 2026 midterm elections.

“I’m not here to talk about that,” Pelosi said when asked whether her 20th term would be her last. “I’m here to fight the fight so that we win in the next election. I must have thought I had the last term over and over again, but as fate would have it, the mission called.”

According to The Washington Examiner, the Federal Election Commission requires that candidates file a “Statement of Candidacy” after raising or spending $5,000 in any given election cycle. The outlet noted that Pelosi, who raised over $8.3 million in her 2024 reelection campaign, would have already surpassed the financial requirements needed to file the “Statement of Candidacy” paperwork.

The Post Millennial reported that Pelosi is currently one of the 10 oldest lawmakers in Congress. The former House speaker would be 86 years old at the start of her next term if she is reelected in the 2026 midterms.

Following the revelation of Pelosi’s Federal Election Commission, multiple social media users suggested that term limits are needed to prevent older representatives like Pelosi from continuing to run for reelection after decades in office.

One social media user tweeted, “Term limits are needed.” Another social media user wrote, “Nancy Pelosi, at 84, exemplifies the case for term limits.” A third social media user commented, “Hopefully Trump passes election reform before then.”
