Fighter jets with the Colorado Air National Guard will fly over the Denver metro area and Front Range on Monday to honor American veterans and celebrate the national holiday.

The guard will fly F-16C Vipers, also known as Fighting Falcons, military officials said in a news release. F-16s flying in formation symbolize strength and vigilance, officials said.

If the skies stay clear, the fighter jets will pass over Scottsbluff, Neb., around 11:30 a.m. Monday before flying over Loveland, Longmont, Westminster and Lakewood between 11:50 a.m. and noon, according to the news release.

“Veterans Day is a time to honor the bravery, sacrifice and unwavering commitment of those who have served our country,” said U.S. Air Force Col. Benjamin Couchman, the wing commander of this year’s flyover group, in the release. “We are honored to conduct these flyovers as they serve as a symbol of gratitude and respect for the veterans in our community, offering a moment of reflection for their selfless service.”

The flyovers are conducted at no additional cost to taxpayers as the flights also serve as pilot training, military officials said.
