A police chief and his entire police force suddenly resigned last week, leaving a South Carolina town without any police officers. The police chief confirmed that the resignations were due to a “toxic” councilman who created a “hostile work environment.”
Last week, McColl Mayor George Garner told WMBF News that the town would be without any police officers and was in a “difficult situation” following the resignations of McColl Police Chief Bob Hale and the South Carolina town’s four other police officers.
Garner told WMBF News that Hale was the first to submit his resignation, followed by the town’s other police officers. Garner added, “We’re actively working to hire a new police chief and more officers.”
In a Facebook post, Hale explained the reason behind his resignation, saying, “It is with a heavy heart that I do confirm my resignation as Chief of Police of the McColl Police Department along with all four of my fellow officers. My personal decision to step away from the McColl Police Department can be attributed to repeated acts of harassment, personal attacks on my character, and the overall creation of a hostile work environment perpetuated by a specific Councilman.”
Hale said that the unnamed councilman forced him to endure “unwarranted and malicious behavior” that targeted both the police chief’s leadership and integrity.

“These actions have not only affected me personally but have also created a toxic atmosphere that has hindered the department’s ability to function effectively,” Hale added. “Despite our efforts to address these issues professionally and through appropriate channels, the harassment and hostility have persisted.”
In his Facebook post, Hale explained that a “significant amount of money was cut” from the police department’s budget due to the unnamed councilman. As a result of depleted funding, Hale said the department’s “critical needs” were not being met.
The former police chief noted that the decision to resign was “not made lightly” and expressed regret over any potential negative impacts to the community.
“I believe that stepping away is the only way to shed light on the severity of these issues and call for accountability and change,” Hale stated. “I remain hopeful that the Town of McColl will come together to address these challenges, prioritize ethical leadership, and create an environment where those in public service can perform their duties free from undue interference and hostility.”
