Bomb-sniffing dog rescued by shelter from abuse. ‘She’s ready for her next chapter’

A veteran K-9 who suffered abuse after she retired is in need of a new home in Philadelphia.

Sosa, a 5-year-old German shepherd, was one of the 28 dogs that were rescued by Animal Law Enforcement from a place that was supposed to be a safe haven for the dogs while they waited for new homes. Unfortunately, that’s not what was happening.

“When they retired and needed a place to go, K-9 Hero Haven, a rescue organization in Northumberland county, offered them a place to settle and find new forever homes,” the Pennsylvania SPCA said in a May 24 Facebook post.

“But instead of receiving a blissful retirement, they were faced with the unfathomable. Respected dogs that once sacrificed everything for humankind were now subjected to a life of filth and neglect.”

The dogs were taken in by the Pennsylvania SPCA and are available for adoption.

According to her pet profile, Sosa is a “retired Explosive Detection Dog who spent her career sniffing out threats and keeping people safe.”

Now, the athletic dog is ready for a permanent home.

“Sosa is more than just a dog – she’s a veteran with a story that deserves to be heard,” the SPCA said in a Nov. 17 Facebook post.

“Once a dedicated working dog, Sosa gave her all in service. When she retired, she was sent to a rescue, but unfortunately, she didn’t receive the loving care she truly deserved.

“This incredible girl was one of 28 dogs our Animal Law Enforcement team rescued from a neglectful situation. Now, she’s ready for her next chapter – a loving home where she can thrive in peace.”

Sosa is an independent pup and would prefer to be the star of the show in her new home with no other pets around, the shelter noted. She also is “water-obsessed” so swimming is one of her favorite pastimes.

“Sosa, along with (three) other retired working dogs in our care, needs a very unique family – someone with experience handling military or law enforcement-trained dogs,” the shelter said.
