A video of Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D-Mich.) in a Harris/Walz camouflage campaign hat feeding a Doritos chip to a “leftist podcaster on her knees” has sparked significant backlash, as social media users have accused the Democratic governor of mocking the Catholic tradition of the Eucharist while campaigning for Vice President Kamala Harris.
Liz Plank, an author and filmmaker, shared the controversial video on her “feministabulous” Instagram account alongside the caption, “If he won’t, Gretchen Whitmer will. Chips aren’t just delicious, the CHIPS Act is a game-changer for U.S. tech and manufacturing, boosting domestic production of semiconductors to reduce reliance on foreign suppliers! Donald Trump would put that at risk.”
Plank also shared the video on TikTok alongside the announcement, “New interview with big gretch just dropped!”
The video, which was used to promote Whitmer’s appearance on the “Chip Chat” podcast, was quickly met with backlash on social media as users claimed the governor was mocking Catholics.
Sharing the video on X, formerly Twitter, Tim Murtaugh, a former Trump advisor, wrote, “Let’s be clear what’s happening in this video. Gov. Whitmer of Michigan is pretending to give communion to an leftist podcaster on her knees, using a Dorito as the Eucharist while wearing a Harris-Walz hat. Do they want ZERO Catholic votes for Harris?”
In response to the video, one social media user wrote, “The Democrats hate Christians. If this doesn’t convince you, then I don’t know what else to say.” Another user tweeted, “Gretchen Whitmer is a lunatic.” Meanwhile, a third user commented, “I’m so thoroughly disgusted. I can’t believe a governor would openly do this and think it’s acceptable.”
On the other hand, other social media users claimed that the governor was likely copying the “Feeding Someone” TikTok trend, where people take videos of themselves feeding one another. In a post on X, media personality Amala Ekpunobi pointed to the TikTok trend and said Whitmer’s video had “absolutely NOTHING to do with Catholicism.”

When asked about the controversial video, one of Whitmer’s political aides told Fox News, “The governor’s social media is well known for infusing her communications with pop culture.”
Whitmer’s aide explained that the video was a “popular trend” that has been highlighted by high-profile individuals such as Stephen Colbert, Billie Eilish, and Kylie Jenner.
The aide added, “The fact that people are paying attention to a video promoting President Biden’s CHIPS Act proves it’s working. Republicans want to distract from the fact that Democrats have invested billions of dollars into local economies to create a record number of jobs and bring supply chains back from overseas, while Donald Trump’s policies would kill these jobs and send them back to China.”
