The Biden-Harris administration announced on Wednesday that hurricane victims could receive $750 from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The announcement was quickly met with backlash on social media.
Discussing the steps the Biden-Harris administration is taking to address the devastation caused by Hurricane Helene during a visit to Augusta, Georgia, on Wednesday, Vice President Kamala Harris said, “The president and I have been paying close attention from the beginning to what we need to do to make sure the federal resources hit the ground as quickly as possible.”
Harris added, “The federal relief and assistance that we have been providing has included FEMA providing $750 for folks who need immediate needs being met, such as food, baby formula, and the like.”

The vice president explained that residents affected by the hurricane could “apply now” for the $750 assistance from FEMA. Harris said, “There are FEMA personnel who are going door-to-door to interact personally with folks, especially those who do not have electricity, but also that aid, if you have electricity, can be applied for online, and I encourage people to do that.”
Harris claimed that FEMA would also be providing tens of thousands of dollars more to help people “deal with home repair,” cover hotel expenses, and “cover a deductible when and if they have insurance.”
Following the vice president’s announcement of FEMA aid for hurricane victims, the administration was heavily criticized on social media for only giving Americans $750 while giving Ukraine, Taiwan, and Israel billions of dollars and spending billions of dollars on illegal immigrants.
One social media user wrote, “$750 for hurricane victims is a joke! It’s ridiculous how little they care about Americans in need while throwing tons of cash at illegal refugees. We need to prioritize our own people before catering to those who cross the border illegally.”
Another social media user tweeted, “$750 for hurricane victims? That does nothing with the cost of things these days. Compare that to what they give to millions of fake refugees for illegally crossing the border. They are giving those fake refugees tens of thousands of $$$ each.” Meanwhile, a third social media user suggested, “We should pass legislation stating that the maximum amount that can be given to a foreign country is $750.”
According to The Express Tribune, the Biden-Harris administration’s funding for hurricane victims stood in stark contrast to former President Donald Trump’s efforts to raise more than $4 million for victims of Hurricane Helene.
