A man was shot by police officers after he “attacked” multiple employees at the Brian Bemis Toyota dealership in DeKalb County, Illinois, and stabbed one employee with a knife on Wednesday.
In a press release following the incident, the DeKalb Police Department said, “On Wednesday, October 23, 2024, at 12:25 PM, the DeKalb Police Department received a 9-1-1 call from the Brian Bemis Toyota dealership at 1890 Sycamore Road about a patron who had become upset and was brandishing a knife. The individual then attacked employees, with one employee receiving a stab wound to an extremity.”
The DeKalb Police Department said police officers arrived within five minutes following the 911 call and attempted to confront the suspect, who “refused to drop the knife and instead advanced.” The press release added, “Police then shot the individual, neutralizing the individual and ending the attack.”
According to the press release, police officers quickly provided first aid to the suspect, who was later flown to a Rockford hospital for additional medical treatment. The DeKalb Police Department said the suspect was reportedly in “stable condition and is expected to survive.” The DeKalb Police Department also noted that the identity of the stabbing suspect was not being released to the public due to an ongoing investigation into Wednesday’s incident.
Wednesday’s press release also noted that the Toyota employee who was stabbed by the suspect received treatment for a non-life-threatening injury and was “released at the scene.”

According to Shaw Local News Network, DeKalb City Manager Bill Nicklas said the suspect police had been notified of a suspect “wielding a knife and stabbing employees.” Since the individual “did not comply” with the commands of police officers to drop the knife, Nicklas said the encounter “ended in a police-involved shooting.”
Addressing the Brian Bemis Toyota employees who were involved in the stabbing attack, Nicklas said, “We’re obviously concerned for the welfare of the employees of Brian Bemis Toyota. And we will be following up on them as well. Our hearts go out to them and their families.”
DeKalb Mayor Cohen Barnes also expressed his concern for the Toyota employees and their families. “My heart goes out to the victims at Brian Bemis, the employees that were there and, of course, their families,” he said. “The physical wounds will heal, there’s no doubt about that, but it’s the mental ones that’ll probably take longer.”
