The U.S. Coast Guard evacuated a cruise ship passenger from his boat off the coast of Oregon on Oct. 6 after the passenger suffered a heart attack at sea.
The Holland America cruise ship Koningsdam was traveling from Victoria, British Columbia, to Hawaii when a male passenger had a heart attack. Someone onboard then called the Coast Guard.
The Air Station Astoria out of Warrenton answered the call, but the ship was too far from Oregon at the time so it headed closer to the coast.
An MH60 Jayhawk helicopter then met the ship approximately 160 miles off the coast.
A spokesperson for the Coast Guard said the crew hoisted the passenger from the ship around noon and took him to OHSU Hospital, where the man was said to have been in stable condition.
A six-wing military transport aircraft hovered above the rescue helicopter, standing by to assist if needed, said the spokesperson, Petty Officer 1st Class Steve Strohmaier.
Strohmaier said the transport aircraft, a C27J Spartan, has better fuel efficiency than the Jayhawk and was sent along with the helicopter since the ship was so far away.
Following the medevac, responders from Air Station Astoria traveled to Florida to assist with Hurricane Milton recovery efforts.
The Coast Guard did not release additional information about the passenger’s condition.
