Elon Musk issued a warning on Sunday regarding the Democratic Party’s apparent opposition to the Second Amendment right to bear arms. The X owner warned that “the first thing that all tyrants do is disarm the people” and emphasized that the Second Amendment is essential to American democracy.

Musk’s warning came after Sen. Raphael Warnock (R-Ga.) indicated during a Sunday interview on NBC News’ “Meet The Press” with Kristen Welker that he was open to having the government confiscate guns from U.S. gun owners. The Georgia senator’s comments during Sunday’s interview came after Vice President Kamala Harris previously indicated her support for gun confiscation.

Asked by Welker whether Harris should still support “a mandatory gun buy-back program,” Warnock acknowledged that Democrats would not be able to “get where we need to go without action in Congress. The Democratic senator suggested that Congress needed to “pass some laws” to deal with the issue of gun violence.

While Warnock told Welker that he was encouraged by the passage of the Safer Communities Act under the Biden-Harris administration, he said the gun control legislation was “not enough.”

“The least we can do is move forward on the bipartisan spaces where ordinary people agree,” he added. “Clearly, there’s a disconnect between what the people, the American people want and what they’re able to get out of their government.”

Despite gun owners having to complete federal background checks to purchase firearms in the United States, Warnock claimed that some politicians “don’t even want to know” the identities of individuals purchasing guns.

When Warnock was asked a second time whether Harris should support confiscating guns from American citizens, Warnock again avoided giving a direct answer. However, he said, “As a pastor, I’ve done buy-back programs. You can pick this issue or that issue, but I think that, again, there’s not one single thing that will make all of this go away.”

In response to the Georgia senator’s comments, Musk shared a video of Sunday’s interview on X, formerly Twitter, tweeting, “The right to bear arms is there to protect free speech and stop a tyrannical government from taking your rights away!”

Musk added, “That’s why the first thing that all tyrants do is disarm the people, just like Chavez did when he was first elected. After that, no more real elections in Venezuela.”
