A resurfaced report reveals that Vice President Kamala Harris previously supported legislation that would have banned Americans from possessing handguns in San Francisco, California.
According to the New York Post, while serving as the district attorney of San Francisco, Harris was listed as the sponsor of Proposition H, which would have banned residents of the Democrat-led city from possessing, distributing, or manufacturing handguns.
Chuck Michel, who represented both the National Rifle Association and the California Rifle and Pistol Association in a challenge to the legislation, told The Reload about the vice president’s prior support of the gun control policy. “San Francisco was a leader in proposing gun restrictions at the local level, and she [Harris] never met a gun control law she didn’t like,” Michel said. “Prop H was the crowning jewel.”
The New York Post reported that Harris has not spoken extensively regarding Proposition H. While the proposition was approved by voters in 2005, the courts struck down the gun control measure before it could be implemented in the city. If the gun control measure had been implemented, San Francisco residents would have only had four months to surrender their handguns.

According to The New York Post, San Francisco was forced to pay the National Rifle Association, the California Rifle and Pistol Association, the Second Amendment Foundation, and other plaintiffs a $380,000 settlement due to a challenge against the gun control measure.
The report of Harris’ previous support of Proposition H comes as the vice president has faced significant criticism from Republicans over her past support of gun control legislation. A resurfaced video recently circulated on social media, showing Harris supporting policies that would allow authorities to walk into the homes of legal gun owners to “check to see” if they were “being responsible and safe.”
The New York Post reported that during her 2020 presidential run, Harris supported mandatory buy-back programs for “assault weapons,” claiming a mandatory buy-back program would be a “good idea.”
While Harris has a history of supporting gun control policies, the 2024 Democratic presidential nominee has claimed that both she and her running mate, Gov. Tim Walz (D-Minn.), are both gun owners.
During a recent event with the National Association of Black Journalists, Harris said, “I am a gun owner. And Tim Walz is a gun owner. And we’re not trying to take anybody’s guns away from them. But we do need an assault weapons ban.”
During another recent appearance with Oprah Winfrey, Harris said, “If somebody breaks into my house, they’re getting shot, sorry.”
