Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-Md.), who previously served as the majority leader in the House of Representatives, suffered a “mild” stroke on Sunday night.

A statement released on Tuesday by Margaret Mulkerrin, Hoyer’s deputy chief of staff and spokesperson, gave insight into the representative’s stroke and noted that the 85-year-old lawmaker is expected to return to his normal schedule by next week.

“On Sunday night, August 11, Rep. Steny Hoyer experienced a mild ischemic stroke and sought medical treatment,” Mulkerrin said. “Mr. Hoyer has responded well to treatment and has no lingering symptoms. He expects to resume his normal schedule next week.”

Mulkerrin added, “Mr. Hoyer’s wife and family extend their deepest thanks to his medical team.”

In response to the news of Hoyer’s stroke, multiple House lawmakers and political candidates released public statements wishing the 85-year-old lawmaker a quick recovery.

Angela Alsobrooks, the Democratic candidate running in Maryland’s U.S. Senate race, tweeted, “I am so glad to hear that my dear friend, Congressman Steny Hoyer is recovering well after experiencing a mild stroke this weekend.” Meanwhile, Republican Senate candidate Larry Hogan wrote, “Yumi and I are keeping Steny and the Hoyer family in our thoughts and prayers, and are glad to hear he is doing well. We wish him well as he recovers.”

Hoyer has served as a Maryland representative since 1981. Before stepping down from his position of leadership in the Democratic Party after the 2022 midterm election, Hoyer served as House majority leader from 2007 to 2011 and from 2019 to 2023. Hoyer also served as the House Democratic whip from 2003 to 2007 and from 2013 to 2019.

Hoyer announced his plan to run for another congressional term in January. “I believe I have more work to complete on behalf of my district, my state and my country,” Hoyer said at the time. “I am blessed to have the good health, strength and enduring passion necessary to continue serving my constituents at this decisive moment for Maryland and America.”
