A new report claims that Massachusetts is on pace to set a new record number of illegal immigrant deportations in 2024 after spending millions of dollars on housing and programs as illegal immigration has skyrocketed under the Biden-Harris administration.
According to Boston 25, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security filed over 44,000 new deportation cases in Massachusetts’ immigration courts over the first nine months of the 2024 fiscal year, which started last October and will end in September.
Boston 25 reported that based on data obtained from the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse at Syracuse University, the number of new deportation filings in Massachusetts is on pace to set a new record with almost 59,000 cases by the end of September. According to the outlet, the state had the largest number of deportation filings last year since 2001, with 54,000 deportation cases.
According to the Federation for American Immigration Reform, Massachusetts “effectively” became a “sanctuary state” in 2017.
Last month, the Center for Immigration Studies warned that Massachusetts is currently facing a “fiscal time bomb” due to the massive number of illegal immigrants who have entered the state in recent years. The Center for Immigration Studies warned that the state will be forced to pay hundreds of millions of dollars on illegal immigrant housing and welfare programs, including a policy proposal that would provide healthcare for illegal immigrants at the cost of $112 to $166 million each year.

In June, Gov. Maura Healey (D-Mass.) sent multiple officials to Texas to warn Border Patrol and illegal immigrants that the state was overwhelmed with illegal immigration and that its emergency migrant shelters were full, according to a Massachusetts press release.
At the time, L. Scott Rice, who was appointed by Healey to oversee the state’s migrant shelter system, said, “This trip is an important opportunity to meet with families arriving in the US and the organizations that work with them at the border to make sure they have accurate information about the lack of shelter space in Massachusetts. It is essential that we get the word out that our shelters are full so that families can plan accordingly to make sure they have a safe place to go.”
According to Boston 25, while announcing that Massachusetts would be limiting the number of days illegal immigrants could stay at overflow shelters in July, Healey said, “I want to be clear, particularly to people outside of Massachusetts who may have gotten word that this is a place to come, that we do not have room here in Massachusetts.”
