Green Beret veteran Rep. Mike Waltz (R-Fla.) appeared emotional as he revealed how former President Donald Trump visited the Gold Star families of the U.S. military members who were killed in President Joe Biden’s chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021.
During his speech at the third night of the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on Wednesday, Waltz contrasted the responses of Biden and Trump to the Gold Star families in the aftermath of the tragic Afghanistan withdrawal.
“We all remember Biden’s disgraceful withdrawal from Afghanistan,” Waltz said. “The debacle and the stain on our national conscience that was. The 13 Gold Star families have to relive it every day, the ones that lost their sons and daughters that disgraceful day.”
“Biden won’t even take their calls,” the Green Beret veteran added. “He calls it an outstanding success. He won’t even take a meeting with them.”
On the other hand, Waltz said that when he called Trump, the former president said he would “love” to meet with the Gold Star families. Waltz explained that while Trump had only been scheduled to spend an hour with the families, he actually spent six hours with them, talking with them about the tragic loss of their sons and daughters and getting them to laugh and dance.

Waltz continued, “One of the moms kinda leaned over to me, and she said, ‘Do you think he’ll sign a picture of my son?’ I said, ‘Oh, hell yeah, he will. Please ask; he will be happy to.'”
The Green Beret veteran noted that Trump later had dinner with the Gold Star families, where he promised that he would “release all the tapes, all the videos, all the records, all the emails, and give these families the accountability and the transparency that they deserve and that they will never get from Joe Biden.”
Waltz noted that two Gold Star mothers came up to him after meeting with Trump and said that spending time with the former president was the “best thing” they had experienced since the loss of their sons.
At the conclusion of his speech, Waltz turned to Trump, who was seated in the VIP section of the convention center, and thanked him for caring for America’s Gold Star families. Appearing choked up, Waltz said, “Mr. President, Mr. President, you helped them heal. And I will forever, and they will be forever, and America will forever be grateful to you for that.”
