An Independence Day shootout ended with a gunman dead and a ranger wounded at Canyon Village in the central part of Yellowstone National Park.

The incident unfolded late Wednesday night and into Thursday morning, the National Parks Service said in a news release.

“Rangers responded to a report of an individual with a firearm who was making threats,” the statement read. “When rangers contacted the individual, there was an exchange of gunfire between the subject and law enforcement rangers.”

Park officials confirmed the unidentified suspect was dead, while the wounded ranger was being treated at a Wyoming hospital. They’re reported to be in stable condition.

What led to the firefight is unclear. The FBI is investigating the incident with help from NPS agents.

Park rangers closed the area where the shooting took place while the investigation is ongoing, but said there was “no active threats to the public.”

The Canyon Village complex includes facilities such as the Canyon Visitor Education Center and “modernized” lodging that was part of a 1950s national parks revitalization effort known as Mission 66.
