Multiple U.S. airlines grounded flights across the nation on Friday as a technical issue caused mass outages across airports, healthcare providers, and banks throughout the world.

According to The Washington Post, the technical issue impacted major airlines, such as United Airlines, American Airlines, and Delta Airlines. The outlet reported that mass outages were also reported at banks, healthcare providers, businesses, broadcasters, IT services for the Paris Olympics, and 911 emergency call centers.

In a Friday morning statement posted on X, formerly Twitter, the Federal Aviation Administration said, “The FAA is closely monitoring a technical issue impacting IT systems at U.S. airlines. Several airlines have requested FAA assistance with ground stops until the issue is resolved.”

According to Fox Business, the FAA indicated that all flights with United Airlines, American Airlines, and Delta Airlines were affected, regardless of the destination.

Delta Airlines issued a statement on Friday, saying, “Delta has paused its global flight schedule this morning due to a vendor technology issue that is impacting several airlines and businesses around the world. We are working to resolve the issue as quickly as possible to resume operations.”

In addition to grounding flights, the technology outage caused issues with healthcare systems around the globe. The United Kingdom’s National Health Service reported “an issue with a GP appointment and patient record system.” NBC News reported that at least 15 major hospitals in Israel were affected by the outage as well.

Early Friday morning, Alaska State Troopers released a statement warning residents that many 911 and non-emergency call centers were not functioning properly across the state “due to a nationwide technology-related outage.”

The Washington Post reported that Microsoft indicated it was aware of an issue on Friday with CrowdStrike’s cybersecurity technology for Windows programs. According to CrowdStrike, the technology failure stemmed from a content update for Windows platforms.

“CrowdStrike is actively working with customers impacted by a defect found in a single content update for Windows hosts,” CrowdStrike CEO George Kurtz said in a statement on social media. “Mac and Linux hosts are not impacted. This is not a security incident or cyberattack.”
