A Kentucky man was shot and killed at a gun store when a firearm being handled by another customer went off, according to Kentucky State Police.

The shooting happened about 8:30 p.m. Saturday at a gun store in Carroll County, in Northern Kentucky.

The preliminary investigation indicates that a customer was viewing a gun for sale and “manipulating” it when a single round discharged, hitting another person in the store.

Others in the store immediately began life-saving measures.

However, the victim was pronounced dead after being taken to the Carroll County Hospital, said county Coroner Brent Stucker.

State police identified the man who died as Chad Wainscott, 50, of Worthville.

The person who was handling the gun has cooperated with investigators. Foul play is not suspected in the death, according to state police.

State police did not include the name of the gun store in the release but said the shooting happened at 1496 Whites Run Road.

That address matches the address of Humphrey Double H Farms Enterprises, which advertises guns for sale, according to Google Maps.

The business’ website said it was closed on Monday. No one from Humphrey Double H Farms answered the phone Monday afternoon or responded to a message sent by a Herald-Leader reporter.
