A train derailed in Matteson, Illinois, on Thursday, triggering a hazmat situation caused by a substance leaking from one of the train cars. Local residents were ordered to evacuate their homes.

The Canadian National Railway train came off the tracks near the 21000 block of Main Street just before 11 a.m., local officials said, according to Fox 32.

The train was reportedly carrying various substances.

ABC 7 Chicago shared footage of the scene on X, formerly Twitter.

Independent journalist Nick Sortor posted an image of the train derailment on X.

Park Forest and Richton Park residents have been urged to contact local authorities for additional guidance.

It is unclear what caused the derailment and the incident is under investigation. No injuries have been reported.

The incident comes almost one year after a similar derailment occurred in Philadelphia. Local residents and businesses were forced to evacuate in July 2023 after a CSX Norfolk Southern freight train derailed in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. At least one car was transporting hazardous material, officials said at the time.

According to Fox Business, 16 of the freight train’s 40 total train cars derailed just prior to 5 a.m. at the Plymouth meeting section of Whitemarsh Township near Stenton Avenue, Flourtown Road, and Joshua Road.
