Officials are investigating after possible human remains were found this week near the University of Michigan’s campus in Ann Arbor.

Construction workers were excavating a site Monday at South Fifth Avenue and John Street when they found “what appeared to be human remains,” Melissa Overton, deputy chief for the University of Michigan Police Department, said in a statement.

UMPD, the Michigan State Police Crime Lab and local experts worked together on the case, she said.

“We currently don’t have any updates,” Overton said. “Their bones are very old. We don’t know the age or time or anything like that, but there was railroad tracks and cement in that location before this construction began.”

UM police did not release further information as of Thursday.

The Michigan State Police First District did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
