Alarm about Islamic terrorism in Germany: “the risk of jihadist attacks is higher than it has been for a long time”, according to Thomas Haldenwang, head of the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution, Bfv, the domestic intelligence service. There are several factors influencing this data, he explains to Dpa, citing radicalized individuals, the effect of the Taliban’s takeover in Afghanistan, the strengthening of the Islamic State in the Khorasan Province in Pakistan and Afghanistan.
Contributing to the spiral of radicalization are also the Quran burnings in Scandinavia and the Israeli military operation in the Gaza Strip: “The situation in the Middle East after the Hamas terrorist attack certainly contributes to the increased threat posed by Islamist terrorism,” he stated. “Germany is more targeted than other European countries because along with the United States our country is considered one of the most important supporters of Israel,” he explains. “The security situation is very tense,” Haldenwang stated, ensuring that his agency has never underestimated the risk associated with Islamic terrorism.
