OAHU, Hawaii – Hawaii surfing legend and actor Tamayo Perry died after being attacked by a shark Sunday.

The 49-year-old was killed on the island of Oahu’s north shore, where he had worked for Ocean Safety and Lifeguard Services for eight years. He was surfing while on his break when he was attacked.

Perry is known for a number of roles in movies like “Blue Crush” and the “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise.

Honolulu Ocean Safety and officers from the city’s police department responded to Mālaekahana Beach on Oahu after a caller reported seeing a man bit by a shark. Lifeguard brought Perry to shore on a jet ski and he was pronounced dead, police said.

The Hawaii Government Employees Association shared condolences with Perry’s family in a statement on Facebook.

“The HGEA union Ohana is saddened to learn about the tragic death of one of our own, Tamayo Perry, a water safety officer with Honolulu City & County,” the statement said. “His passing is a stark reminder of the risks our members face each and every day to keep our community safe. We stand ready to support in any way possible during this difficult time.”
