Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy canceled all of his foreign trips over the coming days as his commander in chief visited Kharkiv to personally oversee the situation on the front after Russia launched a large-scale assault on the region for the first time since 2022.
Additional forces have been sent to the northeastern region, Zelenskyy’s office said Wednesday in a statement.
Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi is on the ground, “making all decisions based on the comprehensive situation,” Zelenskyy’s spokesman Serhiy Nykyforov said.
The Russian army launched attempts to push deeper into the region since Friday after weeks of intensified air-strikes and missile attacks on Kharkiv and has taken control over some villages close to the shared border. Moscow’s troops haven’t been active in the Kharkiv area since Tuesday but are making attempts to dig in and regroup, the Ukrainian military said on Wednesday.
The assault is likely to stretch Ukraine’s already outgunned and out-manned forces and may push Kyiv to redeploy some of its troops from the long front line in the east.
