Christopher Nolan’s World War II drama “Dunkirk,” tells a fictional story of the very real British defeat against Nazi Germany in France and retreat from Europe at the start of the war.

In May 1940, Germany advanced into France, trapping Allied troops on the beaches of Dunkirk. As a result, 330,000 French, British, Belgian and Dutch soldiers were safely evacuated.

Below are some of the best moments from the film.

In the following clip, the best air combat scenes from the film show the pure terror in the eyes of soldiers and just how devastating the battle was.

Another scene shows the main character escaping a German ambush and arriving at the beach where thousands of troops are waiting to be evacuated.

The first bombing scene in the film introduces the storyline and shows that Allied troops continued to get into formation for the evacuation.

Another critical scene shows the end of the battle, including one soldier who couldn’t handle it anymore and decided to just go into the ocean to swim.
