May 30—U.S. Speaker of the House Mike Johnson has spoken out after former president Donald Trump was convicted of falsifying records in a hush money trial Thursday in New York.
The jury unanimously found Trump, who is the Republican frontrunner nominee for the 2024 presidential election, guilty of all 34 felony counts he faced.
He is the first U.S. president ever convicted of a felony crime.
Johnson, a Republican and Bossier City resident, has long been a Trump supporter. The Louisiana native said he was furious about the verdict.
“Today is a shameful day in American history,” Johnson wrote on X. “This was a purely political exercise, not a legal one. The weaponization of our justice justice system has been a hallmark of the Biden Administration, and the decision today is evidence that Democrats will stop at nothing to silence dissent and crush their political opponents.”
Johnson said Trump will appeal the “absurd” verdict, and he “WILL WIN.”
