“Illinoise” on Broadway canceled its Wednesday night performance due to the death of a backstage company member.

The person has not been identified publicly, but was a member of the production who does not appear onstage, Deadline reported.

The show’s social media channels posted a statement saying the production was canceled until Thursday “due to a tragedy within the Illinoise community.”

“We apologize for the inconvenience. All tickets for the cancelled performance will be refunded at the original point of purchase,” the statement added.

The death reportedly did not occur at St. James Theatre, where “Illinoise” is taking place.

The critically acclaimed dance musical, styled around songs from the 2005 Sufjan Stevens album of the same name, opened on April 24.

Directed and choreographed by Justin Peck, with a book written by Peck and Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Jackie Sibblies Drury, the show has already secured four Tony Award nominations, including best musical, best choreography, best orchestrations and best lighting design.
