A 36-year-old man was allegedly shot Thursday with his own gun on a subway train in Brooklyn after provoking a fight with another man. Police say the man who allegedly provoked the fight is currently in critical condition.

According to ABC 7, the incident took place at roughly 4:45 p.m. on Thursday on a northbound A train after a 32-year-old man boarded the subway train at the Nostrand Avenue Station. Police sources told ABC 7 that the 32-year-old man was quickly approached by the 36-year-old man. Witnesses of the incident said the 36-year-old man was aggressive and provoked a fight with the 32-year-old man.

After the two men exchanged heated words, the 36-year-old man allegedly pulled out a knife or razor blade. After eventually putting down the knife, police said the 36-year-old pulled a gun from his jacket and approached the 32-year-old man.

ABC 7 reported that the 32-year-old succeeded in taking the firearm from the 36-year-old aggressor during the fight and fired multiple shots, which hit the man in the head.

Video captured by one of the witnesses on the subway train shows the two men fighting while passengers attempted to stay a safe distance from the fight. After the 36-year-old man pulled out his gun, a woman was heard shouting,” Let me out, let me out!” As the subway train pulled into the Hoyt-Schermerhorn Station, multiple shots were heard.

According to The Daily Mail, once the train arrived at the station, police officers quickly entered the train and discovered that the 36-year-old aggressor had been shot. The man was transported to the NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital in critical condition.

The New York Police Department confirmed to The Daily Mail Friday that the 32-year-old is currently in custody as police conduct an investigation of the incident, while the 36-year-old remains in the hospital in critical condition.

The New York Police Department also told The Daily Mail that police are searching for an unidentified woman who is believed to have stabbed the 36-year-old man in the back multiple times during the fight between the two men.

“The victim here, as the chief said, appears to be the aggressor,” Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) chairman Janno Lieber said. “But the real victims are the people I saw in those videos, who are having a harrowing time because they’re on a train with somebody with a gun.”

Thursday’s shooting incident took place just a week after Governor Kathy Hochul (D-N.Y.) announced that 750 National Guardsmen would be deployed to New York City’s subway system to address the issue of increased crime on public transportation.
