U.S. Air Force officials said they had no knowledge of a fighter jet the day after it was spotted above Rohnert Park and sparked chatter among Sonoma County residents.

In an email to The Press Democrat on Tuesday afternoon, a media representative from Travis Air Force Base in Fairfield said the facility had no aircraft above Rohnert Park on Monday.

“Unfortunately, we don’t have any further information with regards to where the aircraft mentioned originated,” the unidentified representative concluded in the email.

The base did not immediately respond when forwarded information from Flight Aware, an airplane tracking site. It shows an aircraft originating from the area of Travis Air Force Base around the time the jet appeared in Sonoma County.

The jet was spotted above Rohnert Park around 1:30 p.m. Monday. Witnesses said it created a loud noise that was heard moments before it appeared directly above them, causing car alarms to go off.

Other witnesses said the jet made a sudden turn before returning to an unknown point of origin.

The Press Democrat reached out to the FAA on Monday and was referred to the U.S. military.

Area residents, who also referenced the Flight Aware data, identified the jet as an F22. They also speculated it could have been in the area following Travis Air Force Base’s Wings Over Solano event from the weekend of March 16.
