Two-alarm Buffalo fire causes nearly $500,000 in damage

American Red Cross (Air Force/Released)

A two-alarm fire Wednesday morning in Buffalo caused nearly $500,000 to two buildings and killed four cats, officials said.

Fire officials responded to a call just before 6:30 a.m. Wednesday at 179 Military Road about a fire at the mixed-use building with a storefront on the first floor where it started, officials said.

The structure suffered damages worth $350,000, while a nearby address suffered exposure damage estimated at $130,000.

The Red Cross assisted four people onsite, including two children. No injuries were reported, officials said.

Firefighters rescued five cats, but four other cats died in the blaze, city spokesman Mike DeGeorge said.

Buffalo firefighters said the fire appeared suspicious, but the official cause remains under investigation.

“It may take a while to determine the cause. Witnesses have to be interviewed, burn patterns examined and evidence gathered and sent to the lab,” Fire Commissioner William Renaldo said.
