Republican National Committee (RNC) Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel has reportedly indicated to former President Donald Trump that she will step down from her position with the RNC after the upcoming Republican presidential primary election in South Carolina.

The New York Times reported that the former president is “likely” going to promote North Carolina Republican Party Chairman Michael Whatley as a potential replacement for McDaniel if she steps down after the South Carolina primary.

According to The Associated Press, Trump and McDaniel had a private meeting in Florida on Monday, during which the two Republican Party leaders discussed multiple changes that could be made to the RNC ahead of the 2024 presidential election.

The Associated Press reported that while McDaniel and Trump discussed the possibility of her stepping down as the chairwoman of the RNC, a final decision is not expected to be announced until after the South Carolina primary election on February 24.

After the meeting between Trump and McDaniel at Mar-a-Lago on Monday, the former president posted a statement on Truth Social, writing, “Ronna is now Head of the RNC, and I’ll be making a decision the day after the South Carolina Primary as to my recommendations for RNC Growth.”

While multiple outlets have reported that McDaniel will be stepping down from her position with the RNC, Keith Schipper, an RNC spokesperson, released a statement to multiple outlets claiming that “nothing has changed.” Schipper added, “This will be decided after South Carolina.”

In addition to the Republican Party’s underperformance in recent elections, the RNC also recently reported the worst fundraising numbers in 10 years. Recent Federal Election Commission filings show that the RNC only had $8 million in cash on hand at the end of 2023, significantly trailing behind the Democratic National Committee.
