A bottle of fart spray caused a kerfuffle at a Belmont elementary school Thursday morning.
Students and staff were given the option to relocate to another area of Chenery Upper Elementary School after building officials discovered a “strong odor” coming from the building’s sixth-grade hallways.
“We have identified the source of the smell as being a small bottle of ‘fart spray,’” Interim Principal Barbara O’Brien and Assistant Principal Ryan Holland wrote in an email to families.
The school serves 349 students in fifth grade and 364 sixth graders, according to the state Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.
“We have taken steps to dissipate the odor, and we gave students and staff the option to relocate to another area of the building if needed,” O’Brien and Holland wrote. “We just want to assure that all students are safe and engaged in learning activities. Teachers will be following up with all students and our nursing staff has been informed.”
Pumping the spray, also known as Liquid (expletive), causes an odor similar to a “super horrible smelling fart,” and one fluid ounce is “enough for many room-evacuating emissions,” according to a product description on Amazon.
Fart spray is often used for pranks, but it is also used sometimes in military and medical training.
