An armed man was able to stop an alleged thief in DeKalb County, Georgia, from attempting to steal his gun Saturday night. The alleged thief was killed after he was shot while attempting to steal the gun owner’s firearm.
The DeKalb County Police Department told WSB-TV 2 Atlanta that a 19-year-old man was shot as the two men wrestled over a gun the 19-year-old was allegedly attempting to steal. DeKalb County Police officers responded to an emergency call of a person shot at The Terraces at Snapfinger condominiums in the city of Decatur shortly after 10 p.m. on Saturday.
After arriving on the scene of the shooting incident, DeKalb County Police officers found the 19-year-old who had been shot while allegedly wrestling over the gun with the owner of the firearm. DeKalb County Police officials told WSB-TV 2 Atlanta that the 19-year-old died at the scene of the shooting incident.
Based on a preliminary investigation of Saturday night’s incident, officials have indicated that the 19-year-old suspect was shot after attempting to steal the unidentified man’s gun. DeKalb County Police officials believe that the two individuals wrestled over the firearm, resulting in the gun firing and killing the suspect.
Officials from the DeKalb County Police Department told WSB-TV 2 Atlanta that they do not anticipate filing charges against the unidentified victim.
According to Metro Atlanta CEO, DeKalb County had the second highest crime rate in 2022, with 30,396 crimes recorded. CrimeGrade.org gives DeKalb County a C grade for safety, marking the county in the 40th percentile for public safety.
ABC 13 Houston reported a similar shooting incident in August of 2022, where a man was shot and killed after allegedly wrestling with a woman over a gun in a Houston apartment. As the two Houston residents were wrestling over the firearm, the man was shot in the stomach. The man later died in the hospital from his injuries.
