A new report suggests a new “Top Gun” movie is in development after the massive success “Top Gun: Maverick” in 2022.

While Paramount Pictures has not yet announced anything official regarding the development of another “Top Gun” film, Puck News reported that Ehren Kruger, co-writer of “Top Gun: Maverick,” is working on another “Top Gun” that will feature Tom Cruise, Glen Powell, and Miles Teller. Puck News also reported that David Ellison and Jerry Bruckheimer will be producers for the new film, while Joe Kosinski will either be the director or another one of the producers for the movie.

According to Variety, “Top Gun: Maverick” was a major financial success for Paramount Pictures. The 2022 film, which was nominated for “Best Picture” at the Oscars, made almost $1.5 billion at the box office.

If another “Top Gun” movie is released, Military.com suggested that the United States military could see an enlistment boost similar to the 8% enlistment boost that was observed after the original “Top Gun” movie was released in 1986. An increase in U.S. military recruits would potentially alleviate challenges the military has faced in recent years with new enlistment numbers. In 2023, the military missed its recruitment goal by 41,000 troops.

News of another “Top Gun” movie allegedly being in development comes after Cruise and Warner Bros. Discovery announced a major deal that will involve the iconic actor developing original movies and franchises for the movie studio.

“Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group’s Co-Chairs and CEOs Michael De Luca & Pam Abdy and Tom Cruise today announced they will jointly develop and produce original and franchise theatrical films starring Cruise in 2024 under a new strategic partnership between Cruise and Warner Bros. Discovery,” Warner Bros. Discovery announced in a press release. “Cruise and his production company will have offices on the Warner Bros. Discovery lot in Burbank.”

Cruise has previously worked with Warner Bros. on movies such as “Edge of Tomorrow,” Interview With the Vampire,” “Magnolia,” and “Eyes Wide Shut.” Cruise is also currently working on the next “Mission: Impossible” movie at Paramount Pictures after releasing “Mission: Impossible-Dead Reckoning Part One.”
